If your intentions were to attack and invade Iran, invading Afghanistan would be reasonable. With the US in both Iraq and Afghanistan, combined with Turkey and our so called friends in Saudi Arabia... Iran would be completely surrounded.

Even if the intention wasn't to invade Iran but instead just to intimidate it... It would be ideal. Otherwise, Afghanistan is just a land locked country with no oil and no real strategic value.

But obviously the US didn't invade, and just as obviously we failed to intimidate them in any way.

But still, we wouldn't need Afghanistan to invade or attack. We were able to invade Iraq through Kuwait; We could invade Iran without Afghanistan.
