Too bad - that Purple Drank can be deadly...
Quote:
Sizzurp, The magic mix behind lyrics of Hip Hop
Purple Drank or Sizzurp, is the beverage chosen by some the music industries most influential personas to grab that high. And I had no idea about the substance and its availability and widespread use until I viewed a documentary on Lil Wayne, filming the making of his album ?Tha Carter 3?. In the documentary Lil Wayne can be seen throughout, drinking the concoction and both himself and close friends comment on his use of the drug within his daily regime.
His constant consumption of the drink within the documentary and apparent need for the substance left me bemused as to just what the drug actually was. After a quick search I found that the ?purple drink? so often referred to by artists such as Kanye West, Ludacris, Far East movement, Drake and Lil Wayne himself, was actually the substance I had witnessed being constantly sipped buy the rapper and MC star, in his documentary.
But just what is this drug and what are the effects and consequences of its intake? The Syrup which has a number of names including ?Purple Drank?, ?Sizzurp?, ?Syrup?, ?Drank? and ?Purple Jelly? is just your average prescription cough medicine. And the ingredients? Promethazine and Codeine. Used in large quantities, such as in Lil Wayne?s case and those of many other addicts within the Hip Hop scene, it leaves the abuser in altered states of consciousness and provides the desired highs that are desired so badly.
But, Lil Wayne is not the only user of the ?beverage? and he was certainly not the first to swig the ?Purple Drank?. I was intrigued to read that the drug could be traced back as far as the early 90?s when it first entered the scene of Hip Hop, with users such as DJ Screw, who is said to be the original host of the drug into the world of music.
DJ screw was said to have bought the liquid substance into the Hip Hop scene and made the brew a craze within the world of rapping. It?s not always party time when it comes to intake of the ?Purple Jelly? though. The mixture induced at too higher a dosage carries the risk of potentially fatal consequences, in many cases due to cardiac arrest. This was to be the diagnosis given in the coronary report of DJ Screw himself in late 2000 and has since been documented as a contributory cause of death for other artists within the industry, such as Big Moe and Pimp C, both of whom were heavy users of the purple mixture.
And just how is this purple liquid produced? Get yourself prescription strength cough medicine, add sprite soda and mix the two, adding pieces of Jolly Rancher candy for increased flavour and colour. It?s as simple as that. Surprisingly artless and cheap to make, considering its glorification.
