Actually none of those guys lived in caves. Many of them were university educated in the west and several of them had passed enough piloting lessons to perform their tasks.

Air defense didn't come into play because there were no unidentified aircraft.
And it's not a complete shock that a passport was found in the rubble. Many personal affects from several passengers were recovered at the crash sites.
