exactly. Sorry you lost your stuff but it's crazy to leave anything in your car. I live in a good part of Los Angeles too, but I never leave anything of value in my car if it's in the driveway. Now add that their have been car break-ins in your area, well, sometimes you have to be smarter than the thief.
