Its a biological and genetic thing. Its part of what is genetically ingrained in women. You have to make a choice to find a mate and procreate. You have to make a good choice. Life sucks, its difficult and your selection will likely determine if your genes survive or die. You have very few eggs and our brains are wired with behaviors to survive a very difficult life (doing battle, killing mammoths, fighting neighboring tribes, being under constant threat of famine etc etc).
When a man puts on a wedding ring, other women tend to be more attracted to that man because he's already been through a pretty strict vetting process and emerged in someones mind as "the best choice". Women see it like that. "oh, he's a good choice because 1-2-3 women are interested in him" and unconsciously they are more attracted. There are tons of factors at play of course, but all are rooted in similar primal behaviors... also the factor that the "good choice" is soon to be lost as he finds someone else, so there's also a constant underlying sense of urgency and the frenzy increases as it becomes clear that the male has more and more choices and more and more women are choosing him.
