It's really not the filmmakers that are to blame (assuming you mean directors) It's the production companies.

They risk a hell of a lot of money when creating a film, specially with today's standards of quality FX & CGI, star power ect..ect. Hollywood is a victim of it's own success. They are in the biz to make money, so making money safely means going with "predicable success".

There are lots of original films out there to be seen, you just have to accept they won't have the production quality of big budget Hollywood. Netfix has a "decent" amount of foreign & Indie films, browse their library and you will find some decent non Hollywood re-hashed shit.
