With gas you may get around 15-20% if you are lucky. Cars can get the 40% on the electricity.
Reason is power plants are stationary and are designed to get the best efficiency and not have to worry about weight or what they have to do with materials to do it. Efficiency is usually around 60% factor in powerloss over transmission lines and you might get down to 40% efficiency.
This is the reason why it costs less mpg for electric car than a gas engine, diesel is harder to compete with due to the carnot cycle and the higher compression efficiency. I'd still rather have gas than diesel in the winter however.
