One thing that is often overlooked when people are looking to get placement is search engines is time. The longer you have a site online, the better your chances are of ranking higher in the search engines are. The big caveat there is that your site needs to be done right, as in clean code, no malware, no spam, no dead links, minimal redirects and above all, good, relevant content.
I've said it so many times, but adult is such a crowded space that you really have to have something unique and do it right to get decent search engine placement. Googlebot is smarter than most of the SEO people that I have dealt with, and most of the time the information you can find online about SEO is in the best case outdated, and in the worst will get your site penalized on mainstream search engines.
I think that the best approach for a new site is to advertise on the largest sites that you can afford, as they probably have the best search engine rankings. Many ad sites will even show you the Alexa and Google rankings for sites before you purchase ad space. By advertising on these sites, you are building links back to your site that are crawled and cached in addition to being seen (and hopefully clicked) by many potential users. If done correctly, this can have a lasting effect on your placement.
