I've been pretty lucky, in the area around London where I worked in the late 80's was bombed a lot but I was always on a day off or not around for some reason, having said that there was a bomb alert on a car not 20 feet from where I was standing once, false alarm but it could have gone another way.
People forget just how badly London (and the UK) was hit in the 70's-80's, every day was high alert - and most of the IRA funding came from the US. Oh, it was a funny joke then wasn't it when terrorism only affected other people!
