I think the older one was on his way to a mediocre life. He wasn't fitting in. Boston is an expensive city and he wasn't making it. Rather than blame himself he blamed America.
He traveled to a part of the world where anti America is the norm and had encouragement and the religious slant needed to push him to retaliate. His little brother was just following him.
