IMO the Republicans saw what was happening to voter makeup across the country and knew they had only a limited amount of time to get what they wanted. Their combined actions were so incredibly destructive, but it was now or never for them.
2008 saw the voter patterns begin to shift and by 2012 the Republicans had no chance. It's only going to get worse for them as aging conservatives die at a rate faster than young conservatives are being recruited.
