people all over the world believe jones, it's not exclusively american so if it's a sad commentary on america for americans believing him, it's a sad commentary on the world as well.
but i don't think that explains it. one thing that hasn't been mentioned here is the internet and the ease it spreads information, right and wrong. the world is a much smaller place now due to the internet, there's a lot of info to digest, people don't delve into every topic and sort it out.
not saying that's right or wrong, but there is some human nature happening here.
