Sure it has been third world at various points in its history but even if you don't classify that way, its clearly a poor country on the whole.
Don't be fooled by 10th largest economy In the world - its much smaller than China (which is 4 times larger by GDP) and that GDP in india is debt fueled. So a GDP of 1 trillion isn't big when you have a population of 1.2 billion.
