Pretty sure even NASA doesn't claim Apollo 13 landed on the Moon, bro.
What's more sinister is that after Kubrick gave the game away (and is now dead... the plot thickens), they had to re-evaluate the distance to the Moon (aka re-calibrate the device projecting it on to the dome we call 'the sky') by 1000 miles, to 238k, so nobody would make the connection with room 237.
Sadly for NASA, they didn't anticipate the invention of Youtube.
