A buddy of mine was telling me about one of his 'friends' that used to do something like this, what he'd do though is rent a unit at somewhere like U-store, fill it with random electronics boxes and then let the rent go unpaid for a few months.
U-store would then auction off the contents of the unit and any $$$ above and beyond what was owed on the rental he said his friend would get (minus a fee that went to U-store).
Seems to be similar to what this show is about.
Whether his story is true or not I don't know, just sounded funny to me.
