Great thread, I've noticed the exact same phenomenon. Most of the theories above are right on in some combination IMO.

This, this, this, across all industries/markets/fields/whatever. I really need to set aside an official minimum hours per day/week set aside for marketing, because it's so easy to coast on what you've got & focus on the more enjoyable aspects of business... but the drop always comes unless you keep at it constantly.
