There is a simple built in ad system that lets you split ads by sponsor. When people need something more indepth, they use external ad servers if they want to serve their own specific ads.
That being said - for the most part people sell ad spots to sponsors directly and place them on the template or they use separate ad services to manage the ads for them entirely.
