The price gouging here in the U.S. is outrageous and the govt. hasn't addressed that problem at all.

You are 100% correct. Price gouging is the root of the problem in the USA. I went to the ER with an anxiety attack about 15 years ago. I was seen for less than 10 minutes, given Xanax and charged $900.
