People from Caribbean countries are notoriously homophobic. It's a cultural thing. Despite the fact he should be able to see the correlation between himself being a minority and discriminated again based on his race and gays being discriminated against based on their sexual preference he probably cannot due to the culture he was raised in.
For example, my college roommate my freshman year was an exchange student from Haiti. Within the first twenty seconds of him walking into the room he asked me "Are you a faggot? I won't live with a faggot" and I almost kicked him in the fucking teeth. I told him to watch what he says to strangers and got real angry, since he was a stranger throwing around a lot of hateful words at me. He told me how people in Haiti hate gays and he won't live with a gay person. Didn't even have the respect to introduce himself or anything of the sort. He was a real shitball, rude as hell and I got a room transfer within the next two weeks. I refused to answer his question. When he came home one night and saw me sitting in bed with a girl from our hall I chose to simply give him the death-stare. I probably reacted a little poorly looking back, but I was really blown away by how rude and ignorant someone can be.
