What most people don't know is that the running takes place at 8 a.m., but the day before, all the runners drink and party all throughout the night, then they start gathering around 6 a.m. So by the time they're about to run, they're drunk as fuck, and haven't slept in 24 hours. That's why it get's so crazy.
