Well, whats the correct way? And like Robbie said, it depends on factors, for instance me - I can not put that much weight, my weight is always the same, does not matter if I eat lots and lots of food (junk or healthy), does not matter if I go to gym 3 times/week. Weight does not grow without supplements (at least protein shake and similar stuff). And its not only me, like 5 friends of mine that were skinny. In fact the only friends that got results were the ones that had some fat on them - they turned that fat into muscle. But those that were skinny - they got in better shape, but not much additional weight. Except 2-3kg that you gain very quick when you just start the gym. But after that even after 12 months its hard to gain extra 2-3kg. Its just not that simple.
