He probably was getting beat on by Trayvon at some point and he probably did fear for his life. He overreacted and at that time probably wasn't very good under pressure. Some people aren't. I've been in two life threatening situations against attackers with knives and guns. I know two speeds when like that. Calm and detached or totally seeing red and full aggression fight for my life. But once you go through such a situation it tends to change you and you're a bit more ready next time.

I kind of agree - his story was fabricated to reduce the chances of him being charged. He didn't set out that night to kill anyone or even start anything, but instead he saw something suspicious and then acted on it. The problem is everything he did was wrong.
He was getting beat, but it was never life threatening.
