It sounds like insanity does not require equipment and is more endurance type of training, while P90X is more of a weight and muscle sort of training program? While each seem to focus on some of the same core exercises, there is enough variety there in the central theme or focus.

it's best not to think of it as bulking up. look at it as adding *some* muscle, which is what your goals are, as you just outlined them. it's not a matter of just burning calories more or better, muscles contribute to endurance, everything. ... everything good and healthy in your body.
so look at muscle building exercises as the true core to any healthy exercise program.
when you can do 50 pushups + 10 pullsups and feel terrific doing it is a very healthy day.
the second i dropped my goal of bulking up and adjusted it to exercising and eating to just be healthy was when it all got a lot easier for me.
but the biggest reason to do it all by adding some muscle as the foundation is that for long term, there is simply no other way. it's not just the best way to give yourself a shot at staying healthy longterm, it's the only way. again, not bulking up with muscle but certainly something very much like p90x with basic compound movements.
you do get the same compound movement in insanity, but it's flipped around imo. not enough foundation of muscle, but it's a shorter cycle too. it never took off more me though.
