If you're in the U.S. two out of three people are living paycheck to paycheck. Most are broke. Just be honest about the situation and be confident. If you're looking for more than a screw or two it's better that someone is into you rather than your money anyway.
The thing about IM and being self employed is that just as easily as you can lose it all you could be earning $10k more a month by next year if you get lucky and work hard. Many people assume that if you are self employed it automatically means you are filthy rich. Wish that were true but there is a reason that assumption often exists.
Anyway man it holds you back some being broke for sure but I bet 90% of it is you holding yourself back.
