Using only Imgur still doesn't address the issue for content creators/owners. A Mod can look at a site and know instantly whether it's intrusive/spammy/malaware etc...

Yes, and a big complaint from mods as well as users to staff was having to clean their PC after checking for just that when sites were reported and thus the approved domain list was born. Personally, I always have A/V on so I was never affected, but it certainly happened.
You can still do a considerable amount of branding using imgur.
