Rum is distilled from sugar cane and generally aged in oak barrels that once had bourbon in them, while bourbon is distilled from corn and is aged in new charred oak barrels only, which give it that distinctive vanilla flavor. Not sure if it still stands but true bourbon has to be distilled in Bourbon county Kentucky
