I liked working with Joomla's back end better than wordpress because it seemed like you could do much more complicated sites. However it's always seemed to have a issue with "slowness". I'd never build a site with Joomla though as they just didn't seem to fix it's issues as long as it's been out.
Another option I've always liked was ModX, but admittedly I haven't touched it in a few years, but peaking at the site just now seems like they have been growing quite a bit.
