Pick your host accordingly.
Some hosts are geared toward handling fewer (higher paying) clients and have system admins on hand that know there stuff. That's why I'm guessing mojohost made the announcement that they'd cut all their vps accounts (when they did).
Hostgator scrapes the bottom of the barrel for customer reps, mainly because they cater to so many shared hosting users. Brent Oxley (is only 2 years older than I am) cashed out for 140+ million due to his user base.
Sure shop around, but find a good host and scale with them.
I signed up for webair when they were doing damage control last year, I was happy with them. Webair threads can be funny though.
