I would definitely go #2.. I have some relic'ed guitars. But those are just a result of age and a lot of playing. Today I am extra careful when I play. No rings, no big belt buckles and I play a lot more attention to where I am. I have slammed guitars into stacks over the years on stage and it always made my stomach turn. The other thing I quit doing, is just setting them up against something. If I'm not playing it, it's in the stand.
