The problem with free blog hosts has nothing to do with making money off blogs, it's that nowadays you're less likely to get traffic if you're using a free host than if you're hosting your own.
This is because free hosts are a magnet for splogs.
So you're hosting your site on a domain that has probably thousands of blogs, featuring thousands of identical posts so there goes your precious google traffic.
And running your own network couldn't be easier nowadays with wordpress by
setting up a network.
