If you're doing it because you think the job is noble and dangerous then it would be no different than setting up a fund drive to give money to random police or firefighters. Hell, even farmers since their job is probably more dangerous than all of them as far as crippling injuries go, and what is more noble than providing food to your fellow man?
Donating to disabled vets is another story, but I'll be damned if I'm going to give money to an able-bodied person just because their career choice doesn't make them rich.

Plus 1. Why not construction workers. They're usually at the top of the list for occupational fatalities. The draft went out a long time ago. Anyone who enlists does so of their own free will. And no soldier is fighting for my freedom. With the way rights are being taken away these days, I could see soldiers (the National Guard) deployed to take away freedom on US soil, all in the name of "fighting terrorism".
