I think the Japanese are realizing they can bust those guys up by pushing into them and do millions in damage and they are effectively fucked. Those small collisions and bumps actually do a crazy amount of damage structurally. Particularly to those older vessels such as the Sea Shepherd. Damage that is VERY expensive to repair. Also, they have to have the boats surveyed (inspected) immediately and they have to comply with all the standards of whatever vessel certifications they have or they won't be able to insure them.
I was on the boat below (305') and it kissed the side of a similar tanker to what was on the show that you just watched and it did 3 million dollars in damages (though the boat below is an ice class hull and structurally has a lot more going on). Also, thats 3 million in damages that have to be repaired to the standards of the vessel certification (Det Norske Veritas in this case). Anyway... basically the Japanese just did quite a bit of damage if they made solid, hull to hull contact.
