Of course, an 18 wheeler will mangle anything, but most vehicles on the road are not 18 wheelers and sometimes you don't see anything coming at all... As for good brakes and handling - that's not everything. You have to factor in reflex as well, which gets slower as you get older. I read somewhere that a 0,2 second longer reaction time gives you something like 20 extra meters before you stop from 100kph.
Stopping distances (100kph - 0):
Smart Fortwo - 39 meters
Merc S550 - 32,9 meters
BMW X5 3.0 Diesel (E70) - 39 meters
BMW M3 - 30,5 meters
Anyways, to each their own and I hope you drive that thing safely for many years to come, but again - to me I cannot imagine a more terrifying vehicle then that Smart
