If you got a decent CPU you could try to pool mine a lower difficulty coin like SexCoin. With a i5-2500K you can get about 45 kh/s with a i7-3930K up to 100 what should give you 20 to 40 SXC per day (just a wild guess, maybe i am wrong).

If you just want to learn about solo and pool mining you could also try one of the CPU coins that are not on an exchange yet. I mine this coin from time to time, just because OFF is kind of cool and easy to mine, even with a Q9550
