Another reason why people might choose extraction over root canal is the price.
Root canal -- $1000 give or take, depending on dentist and work needed.
Extraction -- $100-$300, again depending on the dentist and if the tooth breaks and extra cutting is needed etc.
For a lot of people the choice if obvious. And for some there simply isn't a choice.
