Actually, I did wear hearing protection in the Navy, but one time I got caught near an sr71 Blackbird taking off, and my muffs were too far away. You haven't heard loud until you experience that. I'll never forget that day -- aside from having my earholes pummeled, it was just a beautiful thing to witness.
And sometimes it seemed like the gear just didn't protect my ears from jack shit, depending on how close you were to the plane engines.
Same thing with my ar15. Most of the time, I used hearing protection -- but a couple times I forgot my gear but said fuck it and fired it anyway. Anyone that has just heard an assault rifle in movies has no idea of the power of the sound intensity those weapons create.
I'm guessing infantry doesn't use hearing protection in battle. I couldn't imagine being subjected to hours of assault rifle sound with naked ears.
