College football is HUGE in the US, college football is played on Saturdays. The NFL/AFL were not anywhere near as popular as college football until the 70's so I assume the NFL chose Sunday as their day so as not to compete with college football. High school football is also huge in parts of the US and Friday night is their night.
Thursday night NFL games should be done away with, the games are usually terrible, 3 days between games just isn't enough to recuperate.
