They didn't have any understanding of anything. They thought the Earth was flat. They didn't know what a molecule is. Or bacteria. Or even what existed 50 miles from where they lived.
When lightning struck it was "God" being angry.
It's a bunch of superstitions written by a backward primitive people.
And somehow there are "scholars" to "study" it. 
You gotta admit, when you step back and think about it for a second...it's goddamn ridiculous to "study" a book that is primitive and simpleminded and is basically a collection of fairy tales (unless you really believe a whale swallowed Jonah) |
I shouldn't have used the term 'Bible scholars' - I'm not talking about theologians, I'm talking about those who study the world and era the Bible came from through the disciplines of archaeology and history, piecing together how the Bible came to be. Of course the supernatural stuff is a fairytale, but it's a fascinating endeavor to unearth the truth of who the people the peoples mentioned in the Bible were, which events are historical or fiction, which Bible characters were real or not. Archaeologists have dug up the Biblical lands a hundred times over looking for traces of Moses and the Exodus and found nothing, so these academics have pretty much concluded that Moses was not a real historical person and this great Exodus of enslave Jews from Egypt never happened.
And for how backward and primitive those people were, here we are 4,000 years later the majority of this planet in 2014 worships that same God those primitive people conceived as the Creator of the Universe - Christianity, Islam and Judaism, all worship the same god, Yahweh the god of ancient Israel.
That's almost as unbelievable and supernatural as anything in the Bible.
