N.F.L. Linemen Tip the Scales

In 1970, only one N.F.L. player weighed as much as 300 pounds, according to a survey conducted by The Associated Press. That number has expanded like players? waistlines from three 300-pounders in 1980 to 94 in 1990, 301 in 2000, 394 in 2009 and 532 as training camps began in 2010.

Note the 138 increase in just 1 year from 2009 to 2010. With 26 teams capped at 53 players each, that's a total of 1378 players that weigh 300+. 38.6% is not a small minority. And I'm certain there are another few hundred in the 280-300 weight class, who are far from being ripped muscular elite athletes.
