Right after I got out of the Army in 93, I took the exam for the Los Angeles Fire Dept. I passed with flying colors. Second highest score of the group. During the individual interview and evaluation, I was then told that there was no point in going to the fire academy, because after I was done I would wait for year and years, maybe forever, to be hired to a fire company. The reason? I was white and I was male. There were quotas, and there were no slots available for my color and gender combination.
