To briefly answer your question, the current strong candidate right now for the Democratic nomination is Howard Dean. Here's a little info on him. He was a graduate of Yale. Got is his medical degree at the Albert Einstein School of Medecine. He was the governor of Vermont for 12 years.
As his stance on the issue, he appear to be somewhat moderate on most issues. He support universal health care and gay unions, yet got an A from the NRA. He fought with his own democratic party to balance the budget. Now Vermont is one of the few states that can hold it's own during a recession.
He appears to be VERY popular in the internet community. He raised over 4 millions on the net, and 7.6 millions overall with over 75,000 contributors ( I think ). This fund rasising is diminutive compare to What President Bush will be raising. I heard some pundits said at his pace, Bush can probably raise 400 million dollars.
Anyway, here's a few links supporting Dean.

This is quite fascinating. You think strong grassroots are big winners for politicians, but wait until 'netroots' catches up. Dean is huge at meetup.com with over 60,000 members and rising.
It's crazy how what the net is doing right now in the political process.
