Undutchable,

Interesting question and I know you addressed it specifically to 12 Clicks but ...

It seems to me that all nations act in their best interest. With the present day gap between the US military and the rest of the world militarily it is an excellent strategy for the rest of the world to act accordingly and hence "cooperatively". For France, for example, it is advantageous to try and strengthen and expand the scope of organizations like the UN and the EU. Much of France's power on the global stage is the result of it's being a permanent member of the Security Council and having veto power on resolutions.

Balance of power. Leagues, organizations, and unions fullfill the role they always have; they combine the wills and wishes of their members in order to increase their political power. OPEC, the UN, NATO, the Arab League all increase the political power of their members through aggregation of power. Sometimes that works as intended and sometimes not. It is pretty difficult to attain consensus on any event of word importance regardless of the organization. Their rarely, if ever, is.

The US does not have absolute power. It has a lot. It cannot enforce it's will on the world however it does wield much influence in the world due to her military supremacy.

It is very important for the US to act cooperatively in many ways and it does. It is not as important for the US to act cooperatively as it is for maybe a country like France who cannot by itself wield enough power to counteract the US.
