For a very long time my local cable company only offered 15mbs down and 1mbs up as their fasted internet service. They did have a 20mbs package for businesses, but it was very expensive. Then the local phone company installed fiber and started offering 30mbs for the same price as the cables 15. Now the cable offers 55mbs and 100 for good prices. Today the phone company announced they will start rolling out 1gbs in the second quarter of this year, but there is no word on what it will cost.
When they actually have competition it seems the cables companies improve, but in many markets they have no motivation to improve.
