To paraphrase a military commander during Desert Storm "I love Russian weapons... I have a lot of respect for Russian weapons,... They make great targets".
I am far from a flag waiver... but I'd say Russia has yet to prove itself in the last few decades in terms of weapons and performance. And the might of the Soviet Union was obviously an illusion - since their own elite forces couldn't even make it down the street during Yeltsins coup and a fistful of Chechens with small arms brought Russia to its knees in a 2 year war against the full weight of the Russian military and all the mercenaries Russia could hire.
