Don't just format, you should delete all the partitions first.

Isn't there a boot partition? And if you format, you are not formating the boot partition, just the primary one? Something like that....

If you want to save your data, maybe get a new hard drive, make that your primary drive. Install XP on it fresh, hook up the corrupt drive as a slave, and your data should all be there unless you erased it in the format. If so, you can get the data back with a program called GetDataBack for NTFS.

I have used that software on a drive I formatted, and I'll be damned if I didn't get every single file/folder back, intact with no damage.
