Yes you are correct,i remember when ffmpeg was just starting it wasn't included in repos,i had to fuck around with compiling from scratch as well and it was royal pain in the ass.But second time when i needed ffmpeg yum install ffmpeg worked fine and there was no need for any further intervention.So even if some software is not currently available at the moment on repos it will come sooner or later.But i think atomic repo is quite fast with updates.
