As Sanctions Start, Russia Feels a Sting
By STEVEN LEE MYERS and NEIL MacFARQUHAR
With the onset of sanctions, Russia's stock indexes opened sharply lower and agencies threatened to cut the country's creditworthiness, but President Vladimir V. Putin's oligarchs stood by him.
And so it begins. If bullets, or missiles, fly over this, I'm sure it won't be Putin's fault. Right?

My point is merely that this situation is far from black and white, although the media in most cases desperately try to paint it so. It wouldn't have to get to such extreme if West wasn't supporting an illegal coup in Ukraine in the first place. The economical interests of both parts - West and Russia, are now at stake. Which of course brings a conflict.
It's what's been happening over and over again in the past, usually with banana republics - first you try to bribe the current ruler to give you economical advantage, if he doesn't, you may want to try to overthrow him, that's the worst, most dangerous and unpredictable solution though.
Obviously, once the "balanced corruption" from Yanukovitsch got canceled in favor of the party that supported the coup, Russia simply had to react. Now that Putin is out of the bag there will be a whole lot of mess to deal with.
It's not a matter of "democracy" it's a matter of money and influence, the "democracy" tale is just something for the public opinion so they can justify whatever happens next.
This is actually a decent article related to this:
