We are scared of things that we don't know or don't understand. I believe our government is capable of a great many stupid, horrible things, as non-Americans point out on GFY on a daily basis. I hope you know that was a bit of a troll...

However, the media that we get here seems to suggest that most Americans are afraid of the authorities - The local police are the same the world over, there are assholes and you deal with them - Then you have the FBI, you guys start twitching a bit - Then you have the next level - The DHS, the CIA etc and you definitely start smelling fear...

Maybe I should stop watching so much American TV.....
