This is not to offer assurances of protection to Ukraine more than it is to reassure a NATO ally, Poland. Russia will not attack a member of NATO. They're more focused on fighting a conflict against Ukraine which is not a NATO ally and not a recipient of lethal aid from the U.S. If it isn't apparent that we don't care about Ukraine, I don't know what to tell you.
The only way the U.S. fights a war in all this is if a NATO country gets attacked.Most likely not happening.
