Well there was internal war back then. They had the militia groups in the 90s too. The only difference is back then the Republicans didn't all support the militia and "patriot" movements. Now basically the Republicans have turned into the patriot movement with few exceptions.
The Republicans today are what they used to call "right wing extremists" twenty years ago - extremely pro-gun, extremely right wing, conspiracy theorists, and sadly often with at least some degree of racism.
